Other muscles of the Lower Limb
Gluteus Medius
Origin: Outer surface of ilium between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines.
Insertion: Lateral and superior surfaces of the greater trochanter of the femur.
Actions: Abducts thigh at hip; anterior fibres medially rotate thigh and posterior fibres laterally rotate thigh.
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1)
Daily uses: Stabilising hip through stance phase
Gluteus Minimus
Origin: Outer(external) surface of ilium between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines.
Insertion: Anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
Actions: Abducts thigh at hip. Anterior fibres medially rotate hip.
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1)
Daily uses:
Bicep Femoris
Origin: Ischial tuberosity of os coxae
Insertion: Head of fibula and lateral condyle of tibia
Actions: Flexes leg at knee and laterally rotates lef at knee if the knee is flexed (Also extends thigh at hip) .
Innervation: Tibial part of sciatic nerve (S1-3)
Daily uses: Walking up stairs.
