Symptomatic hand osteoarthritis (OA) occurs in 13-26% of older adults (Zhang et al, 2002). Osteoarthritis is sometimes described as wear and tear of the joints. Of course the hand has many joints and the disease can affect widespread on single joints.

Risk factors

  • Age (causes changes in chondrocytes)
  • Female
  • Genetics
  • Obesity
